title: Web Developer
hometown: Muncie, IN
current location: South Bend, IN
what do you do? In the two plus years I've been at one:ten, I've worked on just about every one of our websites. That means I use all the cutting-edge tools in our development kit, including Linux, Python, Django, Apache, Nginx, MySQL, and jQuery. Having worked with systems and network administration, I often configure and deploy our websites and maintain any other related services, such as email, secure file transfer, and optimized static file serving.
what's the best part about your job? It has been a joy to apply the hardware, networking, and programming that I learned in college to help people get more from their websites. Lately I've enjoyed the challenge of writing good Javascript code using jQuery to complement and extend new and existing projects. The best part of the job is getting to do what I love with a great group of people. We're in it together.
how did you get here? I first became interested in computers in 7th grade, tweaking QBasic programs and trying to write my own. My friend's father chaired the Computer Science department at a nearby university, so I was able to explore the internet and its inner-workings before "internet" was a word in the dictionary. Throughout high school I picked up the languages used on the front-end of websites at the time, HTML and primitive Javascript, and wrote tutorials to help other people do the same. I studied computer science and philosophy at Saint Joseph's College in Indiana, and then did systems and network administration for a couple years in Chicago. In 2006, I moved back to South Bend to work for an enterprise software company. After getting my hands dirty with some of the one:ten folks on an experimental project, I came to work here in early 2007.
the interesting stuff: Outside of work, I enjoy running, scouting, soccer, and exploring cultural and ethnic variety. I like searching for and nurturing authentic living, in individuals and in groups. Youth and peer ministry is important to me, as are inter-generational friendships. I grew up in the Muncie branch of the People of Praise and still highly value those things the organization has valued since its inception. I consider the ecumenism found amongst us to be a natural fruit of what I believe as a Catholic Christian.
