what do you do? As architect, I conceive and design the structure of all our products, which involves a lot of thinking, writing in notebooks and doing my best to hold a lot of things in my mind at once. As lead developer, I'm responsible, with the help of Justin and Collin, for making sure that our websites do everything they're supposed to. Having programmed for one:ten from the very beginning, I have worked with every programming language and development tool we've used, from the favorites (HTML, CSS, Python) to those we've left behind for greener pastures (ActionScript).
what's the best part of your job? I really appreciate elegance, beauty and efficiency in software code, architecture and interface. I enjoy doing my best to ensure these qualities in our code and working with others who share the same concern for the quality of our websites.
how did you get here? I was first captivated by programming in my parents' basement in elementary school when I discovered that I could enter instructions that would print words on the monochrome screen of a 286 and make the computer play tones. My first serious foray into programming consisted of tweaking the QBasic game, Nibbles, and reading a book on QBasic. From there I moved on to making toy programs in Clipper and learning the fundamentals of programming from an 800 page book on Clipper. In high school I learned about Visual Basic and had my first real experience with the stubbornness needed to troubleshoot hard problems. I learned object oriented programming with Java and several more 800+ page books. My formal education in programming comes from the University of Minnesota, where I learned . . . . After graduating, I joined David, Jennifer and several others in South Bend to start one:ten.
the interesting stuff: My most recent interests include connecting people and information using the power of the Internet, birding, hunting and running. On the Internet, I go by josterpi.
